Our History

Archbishop Prendiville formally established Applecross Parish in 1952. Fr Albert Lynch was appointed as Parish Priest.

In 1953 the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions opened St Benedict’s Primary school and ran the school for the next 21 years.

In 1957 the second set of extensions to the school opened.

Also in 1957 was the Blessing of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Chapel (Regina Coeli) at Brentwood, built by Applecross Parish.

In 1958 the Church hall was opened.

In 1973 Father Rodney Williams was appointed Parish Priest, following the retirement of Father Albert Lynch.

The last Sister of Our Lady of the Missions leaves the school in 1974.

Father Albert Lynch dies in 1976 and there was the Blessing of the reconstructed Applecross Church, in that same year.

1977 Father John O’Reilly was appointed Parish Priest and retired in 2003 when Father Peter Whitely was appointed Parish Priest.

In 2005 we saw the opening of the major re-build of St Benedict’s Primary School and towards the end of 2006 the construction of the new Church and Parish Centre began.

The Solemn Dedication of St Benedict's Church was celebrated on 24 February 2008 by Archbishop Barry Hickey.
